Twisted streets, impossible buildings and shadows that seem to have minds of their own. Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr Caligari is one of cinema's great nightmares, a landmark of German Expressionism in which madness, manipulation and authority become increasingly difficult to distinguish.

Guitarist José Dias is joined by award-winning double bassist, composer and improviser Paul Baxter, known for his work with ensembles including Eyes Shut Tight and PBQ, and collaborations with leading figures in British jazz. Winner of Best Soloist at the 2011 European Jazz Contest and Jazz Yorkshire Composer/Arranger of the Year in 2012, Baxter brings a distinctive musical voice to this encounter with Wiene's extraordinary visual world. Through shifting textures, unexpected silences and spontaneous musical exchanges, the duo creates an entirely improvised soundtrack, allowing sound and image to interact in unpredictable ways rather than simply illustrating the action.
